2019-09-16: Life cycle in the Sangre de Cristo Mtns near Santa Fe
Hiking in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, east of Santa Fe, gives many opportunities to observe the natural life cycle. Here a large tree died near an opening in the forest, possibly created by lightning and ensuing fire. Other dead or dying trees can be seen in the background while new Aspens are beginning to occupy the available space. The decomposing trees are supplying food for mushrooms, beetles, and new vegetation.
